I'm
excited to start sharing some of the activities I enjoy doing, mainly for fun,
but also for exercise and the health benefits. I hope these blogs encourage you
to find activities you love to do, or ways you can enjoy your activities to the fullest!
This
year, I’ve really been getting into cycling. My bike is about 15 years old, but
still rides pretty good. I don’t have all of the cycling gear that I really
need, but that will come with time and money. For now, I am just enjoying
getting on my bike and heading outdoors for a ride. I especially enjoy mountain
biking on single or double-track trails in the woods!
The
great thing about biking is that people of all different fitness levels can
enjoy doing it. I love to see young kids to older adults out and about on their
bikes. You can go at your own pace, be it leisurely or race-mode. You can go with
a group or go it alone. This is a great way to connect with others and make new
friends! Google search "bicycle clubs" in your area and see what
comes up. I did this and found a couple of groups in my area from co-ed, to men-only, and
women-only.
Bicycling
also has many health benefits. Gradually work your way up to at least 30 minutes 3 days a week:
- Tones and tightens your legs and butt.
- Uses arm and core muscles.
- Burns calories.
- Easier on your joints than running.
- Good for heart health.
- Increases energy by releasing dopamine - a chemical in the brain.
- Boosts mood.
- Saves on gas money and gives you all of the above benefits. So if you are within biking distance to work and the weather looks good, why not bike?
Here
is a link to a great website I refer to for information on biking and
hiking trails in the area. Check out your area: http://www.trails.com/
In
my next post, I will address some of the different bikes and cycling
gear.
*Remember: Check with your physician before
starting any exercise program.
So, what are you waiting for?
